Reviews and reactions in the press to A Million Steps by Kurt Koontz

D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, MBR

A MILLION STEPS tells of the author’s 490-mile walking trip on the historic Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route in Spain, and is a pick for any who like accounts of true adventure and self-examination. Koontz found his internal adventures as challenging as his journey, and A MILLION STEPS recounts both, following his struggles with love and addiction and his encounters with fellow pilgrims on the road from around the world. It’s a fine and vivid diary of a journey and its lasting impact, and it’s a top recommendation for a range of collections, from those interested in travel and spirituality to others strong in autobiography and self-examination.

Light of Consciousness Magazine

The 490-mile route of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain is marked by yellow arrows. It has been walked by millions since the Middle Ages. Kurt Koontz was attracted by the physical challenge; he also wanted alone time for an interior journey. Along the way, he kept a journal that evolved into a book about the pilgrimage, its history, landscape, landmarks, and the many details of the pilgrim life. Koontz is a friendly guy with a great sense of humor. His experiences are at times painful, but the whole is filled with beauty and joy: “I learned the trip was not about arriving. It was about living.” He is also an excellent writer, and his book is a page-turner. As the Camino saying goes, “The first third of the trip is for the body, the second third for the mind, and the last third for the soul.” Illustrated with black and white photos taken along the way.

A Million Steps climbs over the high meadows of the Pyrenees, quests through the unceasing wind of the Meseta, and dances in the rains of Galicia. While following the yellow arrows that mark the route, Koontz also navigates through his personal history of addiction, recovery, and love. With outgoing humor and friendliness, he embraces the beauty of the countryside and joyful connections to other pilgrims from around the world. Part diary, part travelogue, A Million Steps is a journey within a journey all the way to the Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela and beyond.
