A big part of any yoga practice involves twists. If yoga is not in your life, then this is very easy to explain. Imagine sitting upright in a chair with your feet facing forward and firmly planted on the ground. Without moving your hips or feet, rotate your shoulders ninety degrees. The benefits of this pose are widely recognized and include reducing stress, improving flexibility, reduction in lower back pain, and improved digestive function.
In a twisted position, the digestive organs are compressed and temporarily experience constricted blood flow. When you release the pose, fresh blood will rush to the area and bring new supplies of oxygen and nutrients. It is like an internal massage for your organs that increases their ability to function.
During the anatomy and physiology portion of the training, we spent quite a bit of time on learning about the digestive system. Have you ever taken a moment to realize how lucky we are to have such a brilliant system inside of our bodies? On a daily basis, you decide what food goes into your mouth. The digestive system prefers kale and quinoa but will also tolerate bad decisions like pepperoni pizza and chocolate eclairs. Your work ends with the lifestyle choices and then the body takes over. It decides what nutrients to keep and what gets flushed.
Now imagine if you could create a similar system to process the thoughts that enter and procreate inside of your mind. Unlike your digestive system, you have much more control of this process. Just like yoga, the only way to improve is through practice and dedication.
Lets start with the input. Are you thinking blueberries, salmon, and avocados or do you feed your mind with fatty and greasy thoughts. Unhealthy thoughts will always register a negative emotion like fear or anger. Like attracts like, so try to populate your mind with positive thoughts.
Many people say, “You are what you eat.” I would counter that “You become what you think.”
Try to be a bit more proactive with your thoughts. Mine the good nutrients from the positive thoughts and use them as a source of energy. Do not hold onto the negative intruders. Undigested food will kill you and undigested thoughts will pollute your soul. The negative thoughts and emotions need to be felt, processed, and purged.
Watch your thoughts, they become words.
Watch your words, they become actions.
Watch your actions, they become habits.
Watch your habits, they become your character.
Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.
